A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Wireshark (Packet Analyzer Software). This issue affects the function dissect_cmstatus_tlv. The manipulation of the argument position with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-20. The dissect_cmstatus_tlv function in plugins/docsis/packet-cmstatus.c in the DOCSIS CM-STATUS dissector in Wireshark 1.6.x before 1.6.13 and 1.8.x before 1.8.5 uses an incorrect data type for a position variable, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (infinite loop) via a malformed packet.
The weakness was disclosed 02/02/2013 as Bug 8199 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared at bugs.wireshark.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2013-1580 since 01/30/2013. The attack needs to approached within the local network. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 64795 (SuSE 11.2 Security Update : wireshark (SAT Patch Number 7317)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 166682 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for wireshark (SUSE-SU-2013:0322-1)).
Upgrading to version 1.6.0 eliminates this vulnerability.
