rack up to 1.5.1 Rack::File path traversal

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability has been found in rack up to 1.5.1 and classified as problematic. Affected is the function Rack::File. This manipulation causes path traversal. This vulnerability is registered as CVE-2013-0262. No exploit is available. The affected component should be upgraded.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in rack up to 1.5.1 and classified as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is the function Rack::File. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:

rack/file.rb (Rack::File) in Rack 1.5.x before 1.5.2 and 1.4.x before 1.4.5 allows attackers to access arbitrary files outside the intended root directory via a crafted PATH_INFO environment variable, probably a directory traversal vulnerability that is remotely exploitable, aka "symlink path traversals."

The weakness was published 02/08/2013 by Ben Murphy (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at groups.google.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2013-0262 since 12/06/2012. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1006 according to MITRE ATT&CK.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 66339 (Fedora 18 : rubygem-rack-1.4.0-5.fc18 (2013-2306)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 166267 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for Ruby On Rails 3.2 stack (SUSE-SU-2013:0707-2)).

Upgrading to version 1.5.1 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (81977), Tenable (66339), SecurityFocus (BID 57860†), Secunia (SA52033†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-38554†). Similar entries are available at VDB-7681, VDB-8032, VDB-10950 and VDB-63665. Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
