The Active Record component in Ruby on Rails 2.3.x before 2.3.18, 3.1.x before 3.1.12, and 3.2.x before 3.2.13 processes certain queries by converting hash keys to symbols, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service via crafted input to a where method.

Multiple issues existed in Ruby on Rails, the most serious of which may lead to cross site scripting. These issues were addressed by updating the Rails implementation used by Profile Manager to version 2.3.18.This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2013-1854 since 02/19/2013. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 74971 (openSUSE Security Update : rubygem-activesupport-2_3 (openSUSE-SU-2013:0664-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 166267 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for Ruby On Rails 3.2 stack (SUSE-SU-2013:0707-2)).
Upgrading to version 3.0 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
