This affects some unknown functionality of the file lib/action_controller/vendor/html-scanner/html/sanitizer.rb of the component sanitize_css Method. The sanitize_css method in lib/action_controller/vendor/html-scanner/html/sanitizer.rb in the Action Pack component in Ruby on Rails before 2.3.18, 3.0.x and 3.1.x before 3.1.12, and 3.2.x before 3.2.13 does not properly handle \n (newline) characters, which makes it easier for remote attackers to conduct cross-site scripting (XSS) attacks via crafted Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) token sequences.
The weakness was released 03/18/2013 by Charlie Somerville as confirmed mailinglist post (oss-sec). It is possible to read the advisory at seclists.org. The public release was coordinated with the project team. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2013-1855 since 02/19/2013. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1059.007 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
