Details
A vulnerability was found in Apple Mac OS X Server (Operating System) and classified as critical. This issue affects an unknown functionality of the component Profile Manager. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:
The JSON gem before 1.5.5, 1.6.x before 1.6.8, and 1.7.x before 1.7.7 for Ruby allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (resource consumption) or bypass the mass assignment protection mechanism via a crafted JSON document that triggers the creation of arbitrary Ruby symbols or certain internal objects, as demonstrated by conducting a SQL injection attack against Ruby on Rails, aka "Unsafe Object Creation Vulnerability."
The weakness was shared 10/22/2013 by Ben Murphy with Zweitag as APPLE-SA-2013-10-22-5 as confirmed mailinglist post (Apple Security Mailinglist). The advisory is shared at lists.apple.com. The mailinglist post contains:
The JSON Ruby Gem permanently allocated memory when parsing certain constructs in its input. An attacker could exploit this to use all available memory leading to a denial of service. This issue was addressed through additional validation of JSON data. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2013-0269 since 12/06/2012. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 74955 (openSUSE Security Update : ruby (openSUSE-SU-2013:0603-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 166127 (SUSE Security Update for Ruby (openSUSE-SU-2013:0603-1)).
Upgrading to version 3.0 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
