A vulnerability was found in Ruby on Rails up to 3.1.x (Programming Language Software) and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is an unknown part of the component Serialize Helper. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a privileges management vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-269. The product does not properly assign, modify, track, or check privileges for an actor, creating an unintended sphere of control for that actor. ActiveRecord in Ruby on Rails before 2.3.17 and 3.x before 3.1.0 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service or execute arbitrary code via crafted serialized attributes that cause the +serialize+ helper to deserialize arbitrary YAML.
The weakness was disclosed 02/11/2013 as confirmed mailinglist post (oss-sec). The advisory is available at seclists.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2013-0277 since 12/06/2012. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1068 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 64734 (Fedora 17 : rubygem-activerecord-3.0.11-6.fc17 (2013-2351)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 166195 (SUSE Security Update for RubyOnRails (openSUSE-SU-2013:0338-1)).
Upgrading to version 3.1.0 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
