Details
A vulnerability classified as very critical was found in QEMU 0.12.0 (Virtualization Software). This vulnerability affects the function e1000_receive of the component Device Driver. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Buffer overflow in the e1000_receive function in the e1000 device driver (hw/e1000.c) in QEMU 1.3.0-rc2 and other versions, when the SBP and LPE flags are disabled, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (guest OS crash) and possibly execute arbitrary guest code via a large packet.
The weakness was published 02/12/2013 as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). The advisory is available at git.qemu.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2012-6075 since 12/06/2012. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 12/29/2021).
