The rtnl_fill_ifinfo function in net/core/rtnetlink.c in the Linux kernel before 3.8.4 does not initialize a certain structure member, which allows local users to obtain sensitive information from kernel stack memory via a crafted application.
The issue has been introduced in 02/18/2013. The weakness was disclosed 03/22/2013 by Ansgar Burchardt (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at github.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2013-2635 since 03/21/2013. Attacking locally is a requirement. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 32 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 68940 (CentOS 6 : kernel (CESA-2013:1051)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350526 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for kernel: ALAS-2013-218).
