Linux Kernel 3.8.0/3.8.1/3.8.2/3.8.3 Child Process signal.c sa_restorer access control

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel 3.8.0/3.8.1/3.8.2/3.8.3 (Operating System) and classified as problematic. This issue affects the function sa_restorer of the file signal.c of the component Child Process Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a access control vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-264. Impacted is confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:

The flush_signal_handlers function in kernel/signal.c in the Linux kernel before 3.8.4 preserves the value of the sa_restorer field across an exec operation, which makes it easier for local users to bypass the ASLR protection mechanism via a crafted application containing a sigaction system call.

The weakness was disclosed 03/11/2013 by Kees Cook as CVE-2013-0914 Linux kernel sa_restorer information leak as not defined mailinglist post (oss-sec). The advisory is shared at seclists.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2013-0914 since 01/07/2013. The exploitation is known to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. A simple authentication is necessary for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 74878 (openSUSE Security Update : kernel (openSUSE-SU-2013:1971-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350526 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for kernel: ALAS-2013-218).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (74878), SecurityFocus (BID 58177†), OSVDB (91271†), Secunia (SA52845†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-40786†). lkml.org is providing further details. The entries VDB-7839, VDB-8073, VDB-8484 and VDB-8499 are pretty similar. If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
