Details
A vulnerability was found in XMLSoft libxslt up to 1.0.28 and classified as problematic. This issue affects the function xsltDocumentFunction of the file keys.c of the component libxslt. The manipulation of the argument uninitialized with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:
libxslt before 1.1.28 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (NULL pointer dereference and crash) via an (1) empty match attribute in a XSL key to the xsltAddKey function in keys.c or (2) uninitialized variable to the xsltDocumentFunction function in functions.c.
The weakness was disclosed 04/12/2013 as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). The advisory is shared at git.gnome.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2012-6139 since 12/06/2012. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 74951 (openSUSE Security Update : libxslt (openSUSE-SU-2013:0585-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 166564 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security update for libxslt (SUSE-SU-2013:1656-1)).
Upgrading to version 1.0.29 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.gnome.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be patching the affected component.
