A vulnerability has been found in GNU C Library up to 2.14 (Software Library) and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects the function __tzfile_read. Integer overflow in the __tzfile_read function in glibc before 2.15 allows context-dependent attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code via a crafted timezone (TZ) file, as demonstrated using vsftpd.
The weakness was released 05/02/2013 by Dan Rosenberg as Bug 761245 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is available at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2009-5029 since 12/09/2010. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation.
