A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Apache Subversion (Versioning Software). This issue affects some unknown functionality of the component mod_dav_svn. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. Impacted is availability. The mod_dav_svn Apache HTTPD server module in Subversion 1.6.0 through 1.6.20 and 1.7.0 through 1.7.8 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (NULL pointer dereference and crash) via an anonymous LOCK for a URL that does not exist.
The weakness was presented 05/02/2013 as Bug 929090 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared at bugzilla.redhat.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2013-1847 since 02/19/2013. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 69739 (Amazon Linux AMI : subversion (ALAS-2013-180)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Amazon Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 121468 (Apache Subversion "mod_dav_svn" Multiple Denial of Service Vulnerabilities).
