Details
A vulnerability was found in Remotesensing libtiff (Image Processing Software). It has been rated as very critical. This issue affects the function t2p_process_jpeg_strip of the component tiff2pdf. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Heap-based buffer overflow in the t2p_process_jpeg_strip function in tiff2pdf in libtiff 4.0.3 and earlier allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code via a crafted TIFF image file.
The weakness was released 07/03/2013 by Emmanuel Bouillon as Bug 952158 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared at bugzilla.redhat.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2013-1960 since 02/19/2013. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 01/03/2022).
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 66916 (Debian DSA-2698-1 : tiff - buffer overflow), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350438 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for libtiff: ALAS-2014-307).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
