A vulnerability classified as very critical has been found in Remotesensing libtiff (Image Processing Software). Affected is the function t2p_write_pdf_page of the component tiff2pdf. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Stack-based buffer overflow in the t2p_write_pdf_page function in tiff2pdf in libtiff before 4.0.3 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) via a crafted image length and resolution in a TIFF image file.
The weakness was disclosed 07/03/2013 by Emmanuel Bouillon as Bug 952131 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is available at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2013-1961 since 02/19/2013. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 01/03/2022).
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 73061 (Amazon Linux AMI : libtiff (ALAS-2014-307)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Amazon Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350438 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for libtiff: ALAS-2014-307).
Upgrading to version 3.9.0 eliminates this vulnerability.
