A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Openswan up to 2.6.26. This issue affects the function atodn of the component Encryption. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Buffer overflow in the atodn function in Openswan before 2.6.39, when Opportunistic Encryption is enabled and an RSA key is being used, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (pluto IKE daemon crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code via crafted DNS TXT records. NOTE: this might be the same vulnerability as CVE-2013-2052 and CVE-2013-2054.
The weakness was released 07/09/2013 by Florian Weimer with Red Hat Product Security Team (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at openswan.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2013-2053 since 02/19/2013. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 72017 (GLSA-201401-09 : Openswan: User-assisted execution of arbitrary code), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165941 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for openswan (SUSE-SU-2013:1150-1)).
Upgrading to version 2.6.27 eliminates this vulnerability.
