Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in strongSwan up to 4.2.1 (Network Encryption Software). Affected is the function atodn of the component Encryption. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Buffer overflow in the atodn function in strongSwan 2.0.0 through 4.3.4, when Opportunistic Encryption is enabled and an RSA key is being used, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (pluto IKE daemon crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code via crafted DNS TXT records. NOTE: this might be the same vulnerability as CVE-2013-2053 and CVE-2013-2054.
The weakness was disclosed 07/09/2013 by Florian Weimer with Red Hat Product Security Team (Website). The advisory is shared for download at lists.libreswan.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2013-2054 since 02/19/2013. The exploitability is told to be difficult. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 69539 (GLSA-201309-02 : strongSwan: Multiple vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks and running in the context l.
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
