OpenStack Grizzly code injection

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in OpenStack Grizzly. This affects an unknown function. The manipulation leads to code injection. This vulnerability is documented as CVE-2013-2161. There is not any exploit available.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in OpenStack Grizzly (Cloud Software) (version now known). This issue affects some unknown processing. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

XML injection vulnerability in account/utils.py in OpenStack Swift Folsom, Grizzly, and Havana allows attackers to trigger invalid or spoofed Swift responses via an account name.

The weakness was released 08/20/2013 by Alex Gaynor (Website). The advisory is shared at bugs.launchpad.net. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2013-2161 since 02/19/2013. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059 for this issue.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 75074 (openSUSE Security Update : openstack-swift (openSUSE-SU-2013:1146-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 166427 (OpenSuSE Security Update for openstack-swift (openSUSE-SU-2013:1146-1)).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (85093), Tenable (75074), SecurityFocus (BID 60543†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-41181†). Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
