Apache XML Security for C++ prior 1.3.0 memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Apache XML Security for C++. Affected is an unknown function. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Heap-based buffer overflow in the XML Signature Reference functionality in Apache Santuario XML Security for C++ (aka xml-security-c) before 1.7.2 allows context-dependent attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code via malformed XPointer expressions. NOTE: this is due to an incorrect fix for CVE-2013-2154.

The weakness was disclosed 08/20/2013 by Jon Erickson with iSIGHT (Website). The advisory is available at debian.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2013-2210 since 02/19/2013. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 67103 (FreeBSD : apache-xml-security-c -- heap overflow during XPointer evaluation (81da673e-dfe1-11e2-9389-08002798f6ff)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks.

Upgrading to version 1.3.0 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (67103), SecurityFocus (BID 60817†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-40254†). The entries VDB-64719 and VDB-64718 are pretty similar. If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
