Cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in WebKit in Apple Safari before 6.0 allows remote attackers to inject arbitrary web script or HTML by leveraging improper URL canonicalization during the handling of the location.href property.
The weakness was shared 09/19/2012 by Masato Kinugawa as APPLE-SA-2012-09-19-1 as not defined posting (Website). The advisory is shared at prod.lists.apple.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2012-3695 since 06/19/2012. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059.007 for this issue.
The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 120376 (Apple Safari Multiple Vulnerabilities (APPLE-SA-2012-07-25-1)).
Upgrading to version 6.0 eliminates this vulnerability. The problem might be mitigated by replacing the product with Google Android as an alternative.
