A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in Apple iOS up to 5.1.1 (Smartphone Operating System). This vulnerability affects an unknown code block of the component WebKit. Incomplete blacklist vulnerability in WebKit in Apple Safari before 6.0 allows remote attackers to spoof domain names in URLs, and possibly conduct phishing attacks, by leveraging the availability of IDN support and Unicode fonts to construct unspecified homoglyphs.
The weakness was presented 09/19/2012 by Matt Cooley with Symantec as APPLE-SA-2012-09-19-1 as not defined posting (Website). The advisory is shared for download at prod.lists.apple.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2012-3693 since 06/19/2012. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 01/04/2025). It is expected to see the exploit prices for this product increasing in the near future.The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1562.006.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 60127 (Mac OS X : Apple Safari < 6.0 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 120376 (Apple Safari Multiple Vulnerabilities (APPLE-SA-2012-07-25-1)).
Upgrading to version 6.0 eliminates this vulnerability. The problem might be mitigated by replacing the product with Google Android as an alternative. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
