A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Red Hat Enterprise Linux up to 5 (Operating System). This issue affects an unknown code block of the component Access Restriction. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a access control vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-264. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
libvirt 1.0.5.x before 1.0.5.6, 0.10.2.x before 0.10.2.8, and 0.9.12.x before 0.9.12.2 allows local users to bypass intended access restrictions by leveraging a PolkitUnixProcess PolkitSubject race condition in pkcheck via a (1) setuid process or (2) pkexec process, a related issue to CVE-2013-4288.
The weakness was shared 10/03/2013 with Ubuntu (Website). The advisory is shared at wiki.libvirt.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2013-4311 since 06/12/2013. The exploitation is known to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 69999 (CentOS 6 : libvirt (CESA-2013:1272)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. Upgrading to version 6 eliminates this vulnerability.
