Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel 2.6.19.1 (Operating System). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects the function do_ip_vs_get_ctl. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Multiple stack-based buffer overflows in net/netfilter/ipvs/ip_vs_ctl.c in the Linux kernel before 2.6.33, when CONFIG_IP_VS is used, allow local users to gain privileges by leveraging the CAP_NET_ADMIN capability for (1) a getsockopt system call, related to the do_ip_vs_get_ctl function, or (2) a setsockopt system call, related to the do_ip_vs_set_ctl function.

The issue has been introduced in 11/29/2006. The weakness was published 11/20/2013 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at github.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2013-4588 since 06/12/2013. The attack needs to be approached locally. The successful exploitation needs a single authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $5k-$25k (estimation calculated on 01/10/2022).

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2548 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 78298 (Amazon Linux AMI : glibc (ALAS-2014-355)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Amazon Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 195827 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Linux Vulnerabilities (USN-2064-1)).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (78298), SecurityFocus (BID 63744†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-42324†). Similar entry is available at VDB-65499. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
