Linux Kernel 3.0.63 ath9k_htc_set_bssid_mask cryptographic issue

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel 3.0.63 (Operating System). It has been classified as critical. This affects the function ath9k_htc_set_bssid_mask. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cryptographic issue vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-310. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:

The ath9k_htc_set_bssid_mask function in drivers/net/wireless/ath/ath9k/htc_drv_main.c in the Linux kernel through 3.12 uses a BSSID masking approach to determine the set of MAC addresses on which a Wi-Fi device is listening, which allows remote attackers to discover the original MAC address after spoofing by sending a series of packets to MAC addresses with certain bit manipulations.

The weakness was shared 11/20/2013 by Fabian Yamaguchi (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at lists.ath9k.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2013-4579 since 06/12/2013. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details and a public exploit are known. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1600 according to MITRE ATT&CK.

The exploit is shared for download at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 75363 (openSUSE Security Update : kernel (openSUSE-SU-2014:0678-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 195765 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Linux-lts-saucy Vulnerabilities (USN-2113-1)).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (89641), Exploit-DB (38826), Tenable (75363), SecurityFocus (BID 63887†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-43058†). The entries VDB-11224, VDB-11317, VDB-11441 and VDB-11510 are related to this item. Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
