It is suggested to install a patch to address this issue.
Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Linux Kernel up to 3.10.19 (Operating System). This issue affects the function ping_recvmsg of the file net/ipv4/ping.c of the component Ping Socket Read Call. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:
The ping_recvmsg function in net/ipv4/ping.c in the Linux kernel before 3.12.4 does not properly interact with read system calls on ping sockets, which allows local users to cause a denial of service (NULL pointer dereference and system crash) by leveraging unspecified privileges to execute a crafted application.
The weakness was released 11/18/2013 by Hannes Frederic Sowa as CVE request: Kernel: ping: NULL pointer dereference on write to msg_name as confirmed mailinglist post (oss-sec). The advisory is shared at seclists.org. The public release was coordinated with Linux. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2013-6432 since 11/04/2013. The exploitation is known to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. A simple authentication is necessary for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 72576 (Ubuntu 12.04 LTS : linux-lts-saucy vulnerabilities (USN-2113-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Ubuntu Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 195765 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Linux-lts-saucy Vulnerabilities (USN-2113-1)).
Applying the patch ping: prevent NULL pointer dereference on write to msg_name is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (89489), Tenable (72576), SecurityFocus (BID 64135†), OSVDB (100751†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-43298†). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at VDB-11224, VDB-11510 and VDB-65499. If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
