CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as very critical was found in Samba up to 4.1.2 (File Transfer Software). This vulnerability affects the function dcerpc_read_ncacn_packet_done of the file librpc/rpc/dcerpc_util.c of the component DCE-RPC Fragment Length Field. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Heap-based buffer overflow in the dcerpc_read_ncacn_packet_done function in librpc/rpc/dcerpc_util.c in winbindd in Samba 3.x before 3.6.22, 4.0.x before 4.0.13, and 4.1.x before 4.1.3 allows remote AD domain controllers to execute arbitrary code via an invalid fragment length in a DCE-RPC packet.

The weakness was published 12/09/2013 by Stefan Metzmacher and Michael Adam with SerNet as CVE-2013-4408.html as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at samba.org. The public release has been coordinated with the vendor. This vulnerability was named CVE-2013-4408 since 06/12/2013. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 06/03/2021).

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 71274 (CentOS 5 / 6 : samba / samba3x (CESA-2013:1806)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 185082 (HP-UX Running HP CIFS Server (Samba) Multiple Vulnerabilities (HPSBUX03087)).

Upgrading to version 3.6.22, 4.0.13 or 4.1.3 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at samba.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (71274), SecurityFocus (BID 63646†), OSVDB (100749†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-42522†). Similar entries are available at VDB-11176 and VDB-65614. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
