A vulnerability has been found in Samba up to 3.0.2a (File Transfer Software) and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects the function winbind_name_list_to_sid_string_list of the component Access Restriction. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. The winbind_name_list_to_sid_string_list function in nsswitch/pam_winbind.c in Samba through 4.1.2 handles invalid require_membership_of group names by accepting authentication by any user, which allows remote authenticated users to bypass intended access restrictions in opportunistic circumstances by leveraging an administrator s pam_winbind configuration-file mistake.
The weakness was shared 12/03/2013 by Jann Horn as Bug 10300 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is available at bugzilla.samba.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2012-6150 since 12/06/2012. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be initiated remotely. A single authentication is necessary for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 73201 (Scientific Linux Security Update : samba and samba3x on SL5.x, SL6.x i386/srpm/x86_64), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Scientific Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 185082 (HP-UX Running HP CIFS Server (Samba) Multiple Vulnerabilities (HPSBUX03087)).
