Details
A vulnerability was found in Apache Solr up to 4.5.1. It has been rated as problematic. This issue affects an unknown part of the component ResourceLoader. The manipulation of the argument tr with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. Impacted is confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:
Directory traversal vulnerability in SolrResourceLoader in Apache Solr before 4.6 allows remote attackers to read arbitrary files via a .. (dot dot) or full pathname in the tr parameter to solr/select/, when the response writer (wt parameter) is set to XSLT. NOTE: this can be leveraged using a separate XXE (XML eXternal Entity) vulnerability to allow access to files across restricted network boundaries.
The weakness was presented 12/07/2013 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at issues.apache.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2013-6397 since 11/04/2013. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1006 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 71846 (Apache Solr < 4.6.0 'SolrResourceLoader' Directory Traversal), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 12805 (Apache Solr Directory Traversal Vulnerability (SOLR-4882)).
Upgrading to version 4.0.0 eliminates this vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 13487.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (89340), Tenable (71846), SecurityFocus (BID 63935†), Secunia (SA55730†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-44551†). See VDB-65665 and VDB-65664 for similar entries. Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
