Details
A vulnerability was found in FFmpeg 0.3.1 (Multimedia Processing Software). It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is the function read_header. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
The read_header function in libavcodec/ffv1dec.c in FFmpeg before 2.1 does not prevent changes to global parameters, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (out-of-bounds array access) or possibly have unspecified other impact via crafted FFV1 data.
The weakness was shared 12/09/2013 by Piotr Bandurski (ami_stuff) (Website). The advisory is shared at github.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2013-7011 since 12/08/2013. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 89899 (GLSA-201603-06 : FFmpeg: Multiple vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks.
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (89718), Tenable (89899), SecurityFocus (BID 63936†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-43279†).
