Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in FFmpeg 0.3.1 (Multimedia Processing Software). Affected by this issue is the function jpeg2000_decode_tile. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
The jpeg2000_decode_tile function in libavcodec/jpeg2000dec.c in FFmpeg before 2.1 does not consider the component number in certain calculations, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (out-of-bounds array access) or possibly have unspecified other impact via crafted JPEG2000 data.
The weakness was disclosed 12/09/2013 by Piotr Bandurski (ami_stuff) (Website). The advisory is available at github.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2013-7024 since 12/08/2013. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 89899 (GLSA-201603-06 : FFmpeg: Multiple vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks.
