Telligent Systems Zimbra 6.0.6 skin path traversal

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in Telligent Systems Zimbra 6.0.6 (Groupware Software) and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code block. The manipulation of the argument skin with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:

Directory traversal vulnerability in /res/I18nMsg,AjxMsg,ZMsg,ZmMsg,AjxKeys,ZmKeys,ZdMsg,Ajx%20TemplateMsg.js.zgz in Zimbra 7.2.2 and 8.0.2 allows remote attackers to read arbitrary files via a .. (dot dot) in the skin parameter. NOTE: this can be leveraged to execute arbitrary code by obtaining LDAP credentials and accessing the service/admin/soap API.

The weakness was shared 12/13/2013 by rubina119 (Website). The advisory is shared at exploit-db.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2013-7091 since 12/13/2013. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details and also a public exploit are known. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1006 for this issue.

A public exploit has been developed by Metasploit in Ruby and been published 2 weeks after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as highly functional. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 72585 (Zimbra Collaboration Server skin Parameter Traversal Local File Inclusion), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 12812 (Zimbra Local File Inclusion Vulnerability).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 13839.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (89527), Exploit-DB (30472), Tenable (72585), SecurityFocus (BID 64149†) and OSVDB (100747†). The entries VDB-11439 and VDB-65889 are related to this item. If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
