Wireshark 1.8.0/1.8.1/1.8.2 PPP Dissector denial of service

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Wireshark 1.8.0/1.8.1/1.8.2 (Packet Analyzer Software). This issue affects an unknown functionality of the component PPP Dissector. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a denial of service vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-404. The product does not release or incorrectly releases a resource before it is made available for re-use. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:

epan/dissectors/packet-ppp.c in the PPP dissector in Wireshark 1.8.x before 1.8.3 uses incorrect OUI data structures during the decoding of (1) PPP and (2) LCP data, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (assertion failure and application exit) via a malformed packet.

The weakness was released 10/02/2012 by Laurent Butti as wnpa-sec-2012-27 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at wireshark.org. The public release was coordinated with the project team. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2012-5238 since 10/02/2012. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1499 for this issue.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 62649 (FreeBSD : Wireshark -- Multiple Vulnerabilities (a7706414-1be7-11e2-9aad-902b343deec9)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 121144 (Solaris 11.1 Support Repository Update (SRU) 3.4 Missing).

Upgrading to version 1.8.3 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at wireshark.org. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (79010), Tenable (62649), SecurityFocus (BID 55754†), OSVDB (85883†) and Secunia (SA50843†). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at VDB-6094, VDB-6582 and VDB-6583. If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
