Details
A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in Wireshark up to 1.8.2 (Packet Analyzer Software). This vulnerability affects the function dissect_drda of the file epan/dissectors/packet-drda.c of the component DRDA Dissector. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a resource management vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-399. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:
The dissect_drda function in epan/dissectors/packet-drda.c in Wireshark 1.6.x through 1.6.10 and 1.8.x through 1.8.2 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (infinite loop and CPU consumption) via a small value for a certain length field in a capture file.
The weakness was shared 08/27/2012 by Martin Wilck as 849926 as confirmed posting (Bugtraq). The advisory is available at bugzilla.redhat.com. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. This vulnerability was named CVE-2012-3548 since 06/14/2012. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details and also a private exploit are known.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 80805 (Oracle Solaris Third-Party Patch Update : wireshark (multiple_vulnerabilities_in_wireshark4)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Solaris Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 121144 (Solaris 11.1 Support Repository Update (SRU) 3.4 Missing).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at anonsvn.wireshark.org. A possible mitigation has been published 1 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability. This vulnerability will be fixed in the next release of the software. Until then, a "manual patch":Http://anonsvn.wireshark.org/viewvc?view=revision&revision=44749 is available for existing installations. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 24098.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (78136), Tenable (80805), SecurityFocus (BID 55284†), OSVDB (85092†) and Secunia (SA48530†). The entries VDB-6581, VDB-6582 and VDB-6583 are related to this item. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
