A vulnerability was found in FFmpeg 1.0/1.0.1 (Multimedia Processing Software). It has been declared as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is the function av_probe_input_buffer. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. The av_probe_input_buffer function in libavformat/utils.c in FFmpeg before 1.0.2, when running with certain -probesize values, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) via a crafted MP3 file, possibly related to frame size or lack of sufficient "frames to estimate rate."
The issue has been introduced in 09/28/2012. The weakness was disclosed 12/24/2013 as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). It is possible to read the advisory at git.videolan.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2012-6618 since 12/24/2013. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
