A vulnerability was found in Adobe Flash Player up to 11.4.402.278 (Multimedia Player Software) and classified as critical. This issue affects some unknown processing. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The weakness was presented 10/08/2012 by Mateusz Jurczyk, Gynvael Coldwind and Fermin Serna with Google Security Team as APSB12-22 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at adobe.com. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with Adobe. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2012-5248 since 10/04/2012. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 69889 (GLSA-201309-06 : Adobe Flash Player: Multiple vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 166696 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security update for flash-player (SUSE-SU-2012:1326-2)).
Upgrading to version 11.4.402.287 or 10.3.183.29 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at adobe.com. The problem might be mitigated by replacing the product with Microsoft Silverlight, Java or Javascript as an alternative. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
