A vulnerability has been found in SonicWALL Email Security 7.3.5 (Anti-Malware Software) and classified as problematic. This vulnerability affects the function Approval Ordner/Add new Approval Folder of the component Cross Site Scripting Detection. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-80. The product receives input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special characters such as "<", ">", and "&" that could be interpreted as web-scripting elements when they are sent to a downstream component that processes web pages. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
The weakness was presented 08/14/2012 by Benjamin Kunz Mejri with Vulnerability Research Laboratory as confirmed posting (Website). The advisory is shared for download at exploit-db.com. The public release happened without coordination with the vendor. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details and also a public exploit are known. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1059.007.
A public exploit has been developed by Vulnerability-Lab and been published immediately after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 103 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k.
Upgrading to version 7.3.6 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at o-sonicwall.com. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
