OpenLDAP up to 2.4.36 numeric error

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a numeric error vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-189. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:

The rwm overlay in OpenLDAP 2.4.23, 2.4.36, and earlier does not properly count references, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (slapd crash) by unbinding immediately after a search request, which triggers rwm_conn_destroy to free the session context while it is being used by rwm_op_search.

The weakness was presented 02/05/2014 by Michael Vishchers with Seven Principles AG as Bug 1019490 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). It is possible to read the advisory at bugzilla.redhat.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2013-4449 since 06/12/2013. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 72276 (Scientific Linux Security Update : openldap on SL6.x i386/x86_64), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Scientific Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 167798 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security update for openldap2 (SUSE-SU-2015:0887-1)).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 13799.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (88314), Tenable (72276), SecurityFocus (BID 63190†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-43194†). Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
