A vulnerability was found in ecryptfs-utils up to 89. It has been rated as problematic. This issue affects some unknown processing of the component Access Restriction. The encrypted private-directory setup process in utils/ecryptfs-setup-private in ecryptfs-utils before 90 does not properly ensure that the passphrase file is created, which might allow local users to bypass intended access restrictions at a certain time in the new-user creation steps.
The weakness was released 02/15/2014 by Marc Deslauriers (Website). The advisory is shared at launchpad.net. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2011-1835 since 04/27/2011. An attack has to be approached locally. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1552 for this issue.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 56273 (CentOS 5 : ecryptfs-utils (CESA-2011:1241)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 119656 (CentOS Security Update for eCryptfs (CESA-2011:1241)).
Upgrading to version 80 eliminates this vulnerability.
