A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Linux-nfs nfs-utils 1.2.0/1.2.1/1.2.2/1.2.3. Affected by this issue is the function host_reliable_addrinfo of the component Filesystem. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a access control vulnerability. The host_reliable_addrinfo function in support/export/hostname.c in nfs-utils before 1.2.4 does not properly use DNS to verify access to NFS exports, which allows remote attackers to mount filesystems by establishing crafted DNS A and PTR records.
The weakness was shared 02/15/2014 with Brown as Bug 716949 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared for download at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2011-2500 since 06/15/2011. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1068.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 55528 (Fedora 15 : nfs-utils-1.2.4-0.fc15 (2011-8934)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 119811 (Red Hat Update for nfs-utils (RHSA-2011:1534)).
Upgrading to version 1.2.1 eliminates this vulnerability.
