The SSH configuration in the Red Hat mkdumprd script for kexec-tools, as distributed in the kexec-tools 1.x before 1.102pre-154 and 2.x before 2.0.0-209 packages in Red Hat Enterprise Linux, disables the StrictHostKeyChecking option, which allows man-in-the-middle attackers to spoof kdump servers, and obtain sensitive core information, by using an arbitrary SSH key.

The weakness was published 02/15/2014 as Bug 716439 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2011-3588 since 09/21/2011. The attack needs to be done within the local network. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1600 for this issue.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 68470 (Oracle Linux 5 : kexec-tools (ELSA-2012-0152)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
