Feep libtar up to 1.2.20 path traversal

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Feep libtar up to 1.2.20. This affects an unknown function. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. This is going to have an impact on integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Multiple directory traversal vulnerabilities in the (1) tar_extract_glob and (2) tar_extract_all functions in libtar 1.2.20 and earlier allow remote attackers to overwrite arbitrary files via a .. (dot dot) in a crafted tar file.

The weakness was presented 02/20/2014 by Timo Warns (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at lists.feep.net. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2013-4420 since 06/12/2013. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1006 according to MITRE ATT&CK.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 72614 (Mandriva Linux Security Advisory : libtar (MDVSA-2014:045)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Mandriva Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 122880 (Debian Security Update for libtar (DSA 2863-1)).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (88146), Tenable (72614), SecurityFocus (BID 62955†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-43446†). Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
