A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Ruby on Rails (Programming Language Software). Affected by this issue is some unknown processing in the library actionpack/lib/action_view/template/text.rb of the component Action View. correctly. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:
actionpack/lib/action_view/template/text.rb in Action View in Ruby on Rails 3.x before 3.2.17 converts MIME type strings to symbols during use of the :text option to the render method, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (memory consumption) by including these strings in headers.
The weakness was disclosed 02/20/2014 by Toby Hsieh (Website). The advisory is available at groups.google.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2014-0082 since 12/03/2013. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 73064 (CentOS 6 : ruby193-rubygem-actionpack (CESA-2014:0306)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 12853 (Ruby on Rails Multiple Vulnerabilities).
Upgrading to version 3.1.0 eliminates this vulnerability.
