Details
A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Mozilla Firefox and Thunderbird 15 (Web Browser). Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown function. The manipulation of the argument insPos with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Mozilla Firefox before 16.0, Firefox ESR 10.x before 10.0.8, Thunderbird before 16.0, Thunderbird ESR 10.x before 10.0.8, and SeaMonkey before 2.13 do not properly manage a certain insPos variable, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (heap memory corruption and assertion failure) via unspecified vectors.
The weakness was presented 10/09/2012 by Atte Kettunen (moz_bug_r_a4) with Oulu University Secure Programming Group as MFSA 2012-86 as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at mozilla.org. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with Mozilla. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2012-4187 since 08/08/2012. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
