Oracle Database Server up to 10.2.0.5/11.1.0.7/11.2.0.3 Core RDBMS improper authentication

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as very critical was found in Oracle Database Server up to 10.2.0.5/11.1.0.7/11.2.0.3 (Database Software). This vulnerability affects an unknown part of the component Core RDBMS. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a improper authentication vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-287. When an actor claims to have a given identity, the product does not prove or insufficiently proves that the claim is correct. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

The authentication protocol in Oracle Database Server 10.2.0.3, 10.2.0.4, 10.2.0.5, 11.1.0.7, 11.2.0.2, and 11.2.0.3 allows remote attackers to obtain the session key and salt for arbitrary users, which leaks information about the cryptographic hash and makes it easier to conduct brute force password guessing attacks, aka "stealth password cracking vulnerability."

The weakness was presented 10/16/2012 by Martin as cpuoct2012-1515893 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at oracle.com. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability was named CVE-2012-3137 since 06/06/2012. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 11/30/2024). This vulnerability has a historic impact due to its background and reception.

A public exploit has been developed by Esteban Martinez Fayo and been published 3 days after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 62662 (Oracle Database, October 2012 Critical Patch Update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Databases. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 19788 (Oracle Database October 2012 Security Update Multiple Vulnerabilities (CPUOCT2012)).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 12673.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (78799), Exploit-DB (22069), Tenable (62662), SecurityFocus (BID 55887†) and OSVDB (85863†).
