A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Microsoft Internet Explorer 8/9/10 (Web Browser). This vulnerability affects some unknown functionality. Microsoft Internet Explorer 8 through 10 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (memory corruption) via a crafted web site, aka "Internet Explorer Memory Corruption Vulnerability."
The issue has been introduced in 03/05/2008. The weakness was released 07/08/2014 by iDefense Labs (AMol NAik) with Zero Day Initiative as MS14-037 as confirmed bulletin (Technet) via iDefense. The advisory is available at technet.microsoft.com. The public release was coordinated with the vendor. This vulnerability was named CVE-2014-2803 since 04/10/2014. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 02/08/2022). It is expected to see the exploit prices for this product decreasing in the near future.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2316 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 76406 (MS14-037: Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (2975687)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 100192 (Microsoft Internet Explorer Cumulative Security Update (MS14-037)).
Applying the patch MS14-037 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 16309.
