A vulnerability has been found in Wireshark up to 1.10.8 (Packet Analyzer Software) and classified as problematic. This vulnerability affects the function dissect_ber_constrained_bitstring of the component ASN.1 BER Dissector. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect availability.
The weakness was published 07/31/2014 by Buildbot Builder as Bug #10187 / wnpa-sec-2014-11 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at wireshark.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2014-5165 since 07/31/2014. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The advisory points out:
It may be possible to make Wireshark crash by injecting a malformed packet onto the wire or by convincing someone to read a malformed packet trace file.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 77111 (Debian DSA-3002-1 : wireshark - security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 167274 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security update for wireshark (SUSE-SU-2014:1221-1)).
Upgrading to version 1.10.9 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
