Details
A vulnerability was found in Samba (File Transfer Software) and classified as very critical. This issue affects an unknown functionality of the component nmbd NetBIOS Name Services Daemon. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
The weakness was released 08/02/2014 by Volker Lendecke with SerNet as Remote code execution in nmbd as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at samba.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2014-3560 since 05/14/2014. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 02/10/2022). The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1059 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $100k and more. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 77009 (Oracle Linux 7 : samba (ELSA-2014-1008)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The security flaw can be detected with the following NASL code:
if (rpm_check(release:"CentOS-7", cpu:"x86_64", reference:"libsmbclient-4.1.1-37.el7_0")) flag++; if (rpm_check(release:"CentOS-7", cpu:"x86_64", reference:"libsmbclient-devel-4.1.1-37.el7_0")) flag++; if (rpm_check(release:"CentOS-7", cpu:"x86_64", reference:"libwbclient-4.1.1-37.el7_0")) flag++;The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 122507 (CentOS Security Update for samba4 (CESA-2014:1009)). The code will run with root privileges.
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at samba.org. It is possible to mitigate the problem by applying the configuration setting Disable nmbd. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be patching the affected component. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 16668.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (95081), Tenable (77009), SecurityFocus (BID 69021†), Secunia (SA59583†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1030663†). Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
