Details
A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in Linux Foundation Xen 4.4.0 on 64-bit ARM (Virtualization Software). This affects some unknown processing of the component 32-bit Userspace Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a access control vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-264. This is going to have an impact on availability. The summary by CVE is:
Xen 4.4.x, when running a 64-bit kernel on an ARM system, does not properly handle traps from the guest domain that use a different address width, which allows local guest users to cause a denial of service (host crash) via a crafted 32-bit process.
The weakness was released 08/12/2014 by Riku Voipio as XSA-102 as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at xenbits.xenproject.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2014-5147 since 07/30/2014. The exploitability is told to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1068 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at xenbits.xenproject.org. It is possible to mitigate the problem by applying the configuration setting CONFIG_COMPAT=n. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be patching the affected component. The advisory contains the following remark:
32-bit ARM systems and and X86 systems are not vulnerable.
