The OLE preview generation in Apache OpenOffice before 4.1.1 and OpenOffice.org (OOo) might allow remote attackers to embed arbitrary data into documents via crafted OLE objects.
The weakness was released 08/21/2014 with Open-Xchange as OpenOffice Targeted Data Exposure Using Crafted OLE Objects as confirmed posting (Bugtraq). The advisory is shared at archives.neohapsis.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2014-3575 since 05/14/2014. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue. The advisory points out:
The exposure exploits the way OLE previews are generated to embed arbitrary file data into a specially crafted document when it is opened. Data exposure is possible if the updated document is distributed to other parties.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 79120 (Ubuntu 12.04 LTS : libreoffice vulnerability (USN-2400-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Ubuntu Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 157060 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Security Update for libreoffice (ELSA-2015-0377)).
Upgrading to version 4.1.1 eliminates this vulnerability.
