A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in Procmail 3.22 (Mail Server Software). This affects an unknown part of the file formisc.c of the component formail Utility. The manipulation as part of a Email leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Heap-based buffer overflow in formisc.c in formail in procmail 3.22 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code via a crafted email header, related to "unbalanced quotes."
The weakness was published 09/03/2014 by Tavis Ormandy (oss-sec). It is possible to read the advisory at openwall.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2014-3618 since 05/14/2014. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 77622 (Oracle Linux 5 / 6 / 7 : procmail (ELSA-2014-1172)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 170520 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for procmail (SUSE-SU-2017:3231-1)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at openwall.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
