A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Debian apt up to 1.0.8. Affected is the function Acquire::GzipIndexes of the component Source Package Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. This is going to have an impact on integrity. CVE summarizes:
APT before 1.0.9, when the Acquire::GzipIndexes option is enabled, does not validate checksums, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted package.
The weakness was shared 09/18/2014 with Debian as Bug 1143815 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is available at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2014-0489 since 12/19/2013. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
